Friend or Enemy

It seems that the majority of people in this day and age are rushing, racing against time and flying through life with no time to take thought of others, pesky feelings, family or any other none important enemies to their most prized possession, time.Time in and of itself is a consistent resource that is not swayed by emotion, evidence, pride, money, or any other resource an individual may think they possess. This resource, time can be a friend if you respect it. In other words time can work for you when you understand it's purpose and have clear boundaries that you adhered to. However, the minute you disrespect and/or ignore time... it becomes a vindictive enemy... causing you to run through your existance without ever experiencing your life... feeling your life... or loving what you are doing.

Meeting About A Meeting and Other Time Thieves

Although most people would admit that they spend the majority of their day in a hurry or feeling rushed, they would also have to agree that we do a lot of un-necessary things that steal our time away from other high priority items. We ignore our alarm clock longer than we should in the morning, which means we only have time for a quick muffled hello to our loved ones, grab a cup of coffee from the drive thru, run into the office where we spend time talking at people some we enjoy others we do out of necessity. We sit through meeting after meeting to discuss what we will discuss at the upcoming meetings. We go back to our desk... check our personal email because we have that right... make a few personal phone calls because we want to, take time to talk to the lonely cubicle neighbor who for whatever reason decides to throw-up a hour and a half of words from her empty life... that we really didn't care to hear about. Then we have another meeting that takes us to the end of the day. Just as we are about to walk out of the office... our supervisor calls us into the office to talk to us about tomorrow for the next hour. Get home, stuff food into the mouth, sit at my computer until 11:00pm and then it's time to go to bed. Where did my time go?

So What's the Answer?

The answer is not simple, nor is it to move faster. The answer is to approach all things strategically and logically. Map out your days, weeks, months and year. Set your goals. What would you like to accomplish today, this week, next week, and this month? Plan your time accordingly. You will have to fight to protect your boundaries and diligently protect your borders... get out of bed at the time that you set, arrive at work on time... work until your breaks and always take them. Work until your lunch and always take your lunch. Work until it's time to go home and then actually leave on time - no exceptions. To follow a schedule like that will initially require you to speak up and sound the alarm when your border is being breached. But once you follow your regimen for a month... others will begin to speak up for you and remind you of your own boundaries. This answer sounds over simplified and too rigid... but if you have suffered as I have the intial rigidity is a must and then once you have become disciplined and developed a habit of befriending time then you can relax a little and enjoy the experience of life.Time is in fact a very precious resource that is needed to enjoy another un-replaceable resource called life and we need to respect it with the same passion and deligence that we show for other not-so important things.

Excellent information for us all.  We don't treat time with the respect it deserves.  I am getting better at it, because I'm doing so much writing; I feel my time is well spent, and I am forced to be organized.  However, I think one of our greatest regrets will be over the time we have wasted.  If we learn from your hub, we might make some great changes!!

BEEN a victim of meetings about meetings more than I'd like to remember! eeeek.

Nicely written.  =))

Hi Marisue,

I am just now learning how to make time my friend instead of my enemy. It has a lot to do with what my priorities are. That discovery was so liberating for me that I had to write about it. Thanks for stopping by.

An excellent hub and one that should be a memo to all of us.

Many years ago I set off on an unheard or unbelievable target, objective, goal. One step at a time in bite like chunks.

glad to say achieved in 104 weeks with no breaks for holidays.

Thanks for your thoughts and the memories.

I think you've got it pat when you say,'learning how to make time my friend instead of my enemy'. I guess that would be the core and crux of good Time Management :)

Interesting hub, my view is you have to understand the nature of time and the tasks you need to complete.

If you fully understand how your task list works at the most fundamental level (ie the most egenric level of the tasks you carry out) then you can interlock with time. If you do this successfully you can complete workloads that you previously thought were totally impossible. And..if you get it right you can do this totally stress free!

Here here. I can really appreciate your words. Great hub. Time tends to be the hardest thing in life to balance...at least for me. I wrote a little fun hub about my dilemma with time. I like to think that I am more in control these days.
